Fireworks Show on St. Stephen's Day in Budapest

Sept. 28, 2023

Stephen I, also known as King Saint Stephen, was the last Grand Prince of the Hungarians between 997 and 1000 or 1001, and the first King of Hungary from 1000 or 1001, until his death in 1038. In a series of wars against semi-independent tribes and chieftains he unified the Carpathian Basin. He protected the independence of his kingdom by forcing the invading troops of Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II to withdraw from Hungary in 1030.

In 1083 he was canonized by Pope Gregory VII, and nowadays his feast day is also a public holiday commemorating the foundation of the state, known as State Foundation Day. This year the festivities in Hungarian capital of Budapest started on Friday, 18 August, with the festival culminating in an enormous firework display along the Danube River on 20 August.

We welcome our readers to enjoy the grandiose fireworks show of unprecedented complexity. Through the play of fireworks and lights, the fateful historical events and genesis of the Hungarian nation were brought to life when 34,000 pyrotechnic effects lit up the sky from 230 launch points, including the Liberty and Elizabeth bridges, seven river barges, and numerous other points. It’s time to embrace the celebration mood of the people of Hungary on their national holiday!
