Cinematography: The Sandlot (1993)

The Sandlot is a 1993 American coming-of-age sports comedy film co-written, directed, and narrated by David Mickey Evans. It may be shamelessly derivative and overly nostalgic, but The Sandlot is nevertheless a genuinely sweet and funny coming-of-age adventure. The movie was praised by critics, grossed $34 million worldwide and has since become a cult film. And it has by far one of the most American 4th of July scenes ever put on film with a group of kids playing baseball in the 1950s on the 4th of July!

Painting: Sam Francis, Firework (1963)

Sam Francis began painting when he was constrained to spend long hours in hospital after being diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis. In his early career, he experimented with Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism, to eventually develop a personal style characterized by dripping bright colors onto the canvas. Over a thousand of his works bear references to Chinese and Japanese art, French Impressionism, or his own Bay Area roots.

Literature: Frederick Seidel, Downtown (2010)

Frederick Seidel has been called “the poet the 20th century deserved” and lauded as one of “the best poets writing today”; he has also been accused of writing “sinister” and “disturbing” poetry. Seidel has published over a dozen collections of poetry, including the National Book Critics Circle Award winning Sunrise (1979), Pulitzer Prize-nominee Going Fast (1998), and Ooga-Booga (2006), which was nominated for another National Book Critics Circle Award and shortlisted for the Griffin International Poetry Prize.

“July 4th fireworks exhale over the Hudson sadly.

It is beautiful that they have to disappear.

It's like the time you said I love you madly.

That was an hour ago. It's been a fervent year”.
