Many of us know May 1st as Labor Day or International Workers' Day. Today SuperFireworks Co., Ltd. will tell you what kind of holiday it is and why different countries celebrate it under different names.
May Day is a public holiday in some regions, usually celebrated on 1 May or the first Monday of May. It is an ancient festival marking the first day of summer, and a current traditional spring holiday in many European cultures. Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the festivities. The earliest known May festivities hark back to the Roman day Floralia, celebrating Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers.
May Day in its modern form appeared in the middle of the 19th century. On April 21, 1856, the workers of Australia advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. Since then, this holiday in Australia has become an annual event.
The events of May 1-4, 1886 in Chicago and the demonstrations of American workers on May 1, 1890 led to the announcement of this day as the Day of Solidarity of All Workers of the World.
In Russia, at first this was the "Day of the International", and since 1972 the holiday has become known as the "Day of International Solidarity of Workers - May Day" and was celebrated on May 1 and 2. On May 1, workers' demonstrations and military parades were held. On the second day of the holiday, as a rule, "may days" were held throughout the country, with mass celebrations in parks and wild nature. In 1992, the holiday was renamed as the "Spring and Labor Festival". The same name is used in Tajikistan.
In China, Labor Day or International Workers' Day is a public holiday commemorating the contribution of workers to the development of the country. This year, Labor Day in China runs from April 30 to May 4. Initially, the holiday served as an occasion to honor workers throughout China. Today, Labor Day has become just a fun holiday designed to spend free time with friends and family.
In Kazakhstan, on this day, the Day of Unity of the People of Kazakhstan is celebrated, and in Ukraine, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka (and almost ninety other countries of the world) people celebrate Labor Day. In the United States, Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September, while in Japan Labor Day is celebrated on November 23rd.
In Finland, May Day (Vappu) is the students' spring carnival. In Helsinki, the celebration begins on April 30, when at six o'clock in the evening, students put on a white cap - the headdress of applicants - on the statue of the nymph Havis Amanda, standing on the Market Square of the capital. At this moment, all those present also put on their caps and open bottles of champagne. Those who graduated from the lyceum and passed the final exam receive a white student cap.
